Love Canal: A Grave Concern
Alberto Innocente
From 1942 to 1953 a Niagara Falls area known as Love Canal was filled by Hooker Chemical Company with 21,000 tons of toxic waste, then covered with layers of terrain and after that sold to the city. A school and a new neighborhood were built over that dump. A few years later dangerous pollution appeared and inhabitants were forced to live their homes but a combative woman and mother, Lois Gibbs, started a conflict against both Hooker and city administration ; her stubbornness and carefulness led President Jimmy Carter to introduce in a new federal law, the so-called Superfund law, in 1980. Lois Gibbs didn't give up her battle when she won that challenge, but she carried on a broader program about environment from a different point of view, a program better known as environmental health in which we can find a deep attention to human health in relation to environmental health. Her thought had a lot of influence: on a new environmental point of view, on an afterthought about human health and environmental awareness, and even on ecofeminist way of thinking.

“Will this terrible possibility become a fact?”. Il progresso scientifico applicato alla guerra
Maria Grazia Suriano
This paper provides a comparative reading of the works of two women scientists, Gertrude Woker and Kathleen Lonsdale, who have developed between the first and second postwar period a careful critique to the role of science and scientists in armaments production. Their thinking is part of the disarmament policy of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

The essay examines Kathleen Lonsdale's reflection on disarmament. A scientist and non-violent pacifist, she has devoted considerable space to the question of the civil responsibility of scientists and the role they should play in keeping the public informed about the results of their research. In particular, I analyzed Lonsdale's considerations on the nuclear danger and its repercussions on collective security, to which Kathleen had devoted herself in the 1954 essay Security and Responsibility. Never proposed in Italian, I edited the translation of Security and Responsibility, available at: https://www.unive.it/pag/fileadmin/user_upload/dipartimenti/DSLCC/documenti/DEP/numeri/n45/10_Lonsdale.pdf

The historiographical review focuses on women's pacifism in Italy after World War Two. The issue has been little investigated by Italian historiography, and only in recent times has it received growing attention. Studies have focused in particular on women's pacifist associations during the Cold War, while research on the women's pacifist mobilization during 1980s and 1990s has not developed. Historiography has highlighted how in the 1970s the feminist movement questioned the relationship woman-motherhood-peace and proposed pacifism as a conscious political choice based upon nonviolence and women's liberation.
