About Lucy and Yak

Are They Ethical?

NoteSustainability is complex and can be difficult to determine from the consumer's end. My response here is based on information provided by this shop, along with common sense, context clues, tell-tale signs, etc. Since my blog is not focused on debunking/proving sustainability claims, I encourage you to further research.

Yes, they appear to be ethical/sustainable. According to their Sustainability page, they are committed to using GOTS-certified organic cotton and OCS-verified materials. Their fabrics, such as GRS recycled polyester, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose, linen, bamboo, and hemp, meet high environmental and social standards through third-party certifications. These materials are biodegradable, protect water and soil, and require fewer pesticides.

Here is a list of sustainability-related organizations/certifications they claim to be partnered with and/or have. For the ones I can confirm, I have linked to evidence.

  • GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard
  • GRS – Global Recycled Standard
  • OCS – Organic Content Standard
  • FLA – Fair Labor Association
  • Sedex
  • Greenly
  • UKFT

I can also confirm that my items arrived in recyclable packaging.

Lucy and Yak Review and Order Details

I ordered the below items on 10/19/2023 to my address in North Carolina (United States). I paid a total of $285.30 to Global-e via PayPal. The charge appears on my credit card statement as “PAYPAL *GLBE LUCY YAK”. View Order Confirmation

1) Drew Straight-Leg Jeans

Brand Label: Lucy & Yak

Color/Size/Cost: Light Wash Blue / W30 (UK 12 Reg) / $75

Fit: I ordered based on the size guide provided, and they fit 1-2 sizes too small (they are non-stretch). The front pockets are very deep though, which is a plus! View my Body Measurements for size reference.

Quality: In my opinion, the quality is decent. The back seam is slightly crooked, but not crooked enough to be a deal breaker alone. The material is also a thinner denim, but still fairly sturdy. See my to know my current quality-rating standards.

Value: They aren’t bad, but I know I can find better-quality sustainable jeans at a similar price point. So, they are NOT worth the price I paid.

2) Original Dungaree

Brand Label: Lucy & Yak

Color/Size/Cost: Black / UK 12 (Reg) / $74

Country: Made in India

Material: 100% Organic Cotton

Fit: I ordered based on the size guide provided, and it fits well. I struggle to find one-pieces that fit due to my proportions (larger bottom half and longer torso), but these fit loosely and comfortably! View my Body Measurements for size reference.

Quality:In my opinion, the quality is decent. The light and thin canvas material feels nice and has some give, although it is non-stretch. It is not stiff or crinkly like some canvas items are. See my to know my current quality-rating standards.

Value: I wouldn’t pay full price for this, but would absolutely get it on sale.

3) Harper Fleece Jacket

Brand Label: Lucy & Yak

Color/Size/Cost: Flowers In A Row / M (UK 12-14) / $117

Country: Made in India

Material: 100% Recycled Polyester

Fit: I ordered based on the size guide provided, and it fits 1 size too big. The sherpa material on the outside is soft and cozy (not silky soft but like a blanket that has been washed and dried two times), and the massive pockets are great. View my Body Measurements for size reference.

Quality:In my opinion, the quality is good. It feels very thick and sturdy. See my to know my current quality-rating standards.

Value: It is expensive but worth the price. Ideally, it would be on sale!

Customer Service Experience

General Responsiveness

My experience was quick and seamless, and support responded promptly when I emailed about return costs.

Return Details

While going through the return process in their portal, they gave me the option of paying the taxes and duties fee right away, or later upon delivery to the return destination. Support informed me that this cost is covered by THEM (not me). So, I opted to ‘pay later’ which I never had to do.

They provided me with the following return/refund options:

  1. Return your package yourself (you choose the shipper)
  2. Use their prepaid label service which costs $9.95

Reverse Search & Analysis

Reverse Image Search:

Lucy & Yak appears to be the source of their product images.

I highly recommend doing Reverse Image Searches when shopping online for price and quality checking purposes. You might be surprised at what you find!

Website/Company Search:

No suspicious information (such as lawsuits or alerts from the Better Business Bureau) was found.

Do I Recommend This Shop?

Based on my experience, they are a legitimate shop. I paid for my items, received them within the estimated time frame, successfully completed a return, and received a full refund.

With that being said, I would absolutely shop here again! Here are my 4 reasons why:

  1. I greatly appreciate the efforts this company has put into sustainability. Everything from listing the location of all of their suppliers, to my order arriving in a paper bag, to the clothing being made from organic and recycled materials is incredible.
  2. Their prices are steep, but their sale items ARE returnable which is amazing! So, you can find some items at a more affordable price point.
  3. U.S. returns are inexpensive considering it is going to the U.K. $9.95 for the prepaid return label is not bad at all.
  4. My order arrived lightning fast considering it came from overseas!

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and shopping experience. Next time, I will be sifting through their sale section since they are returnable!
